My son go into 5th grade this year and has struggled a little bit with math. He didn't struggle because he couldn't do it, but because he would fly through it to get it done so he could do something he was actually interested in. I decided that I should find out what he was supposed to be learning to help him to study. When I discovered what he was doing, I went over it with him to be sure he understood it, which he didn't. Then I made him do a bunch of problems with the promise that he would have to do 2 more for each wrong answer. Surprisingly, he didn't miss any problems because he was so much more careful than normal because he did not want to do any extra problems.
